A useful study plan starts with the official examination outline, then adapts to your weaknesses. Spending equal time on every familiar topic can leave a major gap in a less comfortable area.
The seven areas in the CSLB Law and Business study guide
The current CSLB study guide gives these weights: Business Organization and Licensing 13%; Business Finances 15%; Employment Requirements 20%; Insurance and Liens 12%; Contract Requirements and Execution 21%; Public Works 5%; and Safety 14%. Together they total 100%. Include Public Works as its own part of your study plan, even though it carries the smallest weight. S4
These percentages guide preparation; they do not establish an exact number of scored questions on your individual examination.
What is the PSI CSLB exam format?
PSI administers CSLB examinations on a computer, using multiple-choice questions. CSLB allows 3½ hours for each examination. Follow the current scheduling instructions for identification, arrival and permitted items. Check the current official instructions for question counts and scoring. Claims of 115 questions, 15 unscored items or a universal 70–72% passing score should not be treated as confirmed specifications. S5
Turn the outline into a weekly routine
As a starting exercise, divide ten study hours proportionally across the seven areas. Then spend additional time on the topics where practice reveals gaps. This is a suggested learning method, not a CSLB requirement.
For each missed question, write down the rule, the detail you overlooked and why the alternatives fail. Mix topics once the basics are familiar. Finish with timed sessions, leaving time to review difficult questions under the examination’s current navigation rules.
The free 30-question Contractor test can identify topics for further work. It is a practice sample, not an official examination or a validated prediction of passing. Use it to choose what to study next rather than to decide that preparation is finished.
