CSLB experience requirements: how to document your four qualifying years

Learn which construction experience counts for a CSLB license, how education credit works and how to document your work history.

A contractor-license application needs evidence of qualifying experience, not just a list of years spent around construction. The qualifying individual generally needs four years of appropriate journey-level or higher experience within the preceding ten years. S22

Which work counts toward CSLB’s four-year requirement?

Describe duties that match the classification sought and the level of responsibility actually held. Journey-level, foreman, supervising-employee and contractor experience can be relevant. Time as a trainee is not automatically equivalent to qualifying journey-level work.

Part-time experience must be assessed accordingly. Do not count overlapping jobs twice as if they created extra calendar years. A clear chronology makes the application easier to verify. S22

Does college count toward California contractor license experience?

CSLB may grant credit for qualifying education, technical training or apprenticeship. The maximum education-related credit is generally three years, leaving at least one year of practical experience. The actual credit depends on the program and CSLB’s evaluation; a degree does not automatically produce the maximum allowance. S22

Certification must reflect direct knowledge

The person certifying experience must have firsthand knowledge of it. Keep records that support dates, duties and scope, and follow the current CSLB form instructions. Prepare your records so that CSLB can verify the information in your application.

The ten-year lookback is the general rule, but older records may still be relevant. Specific provisions may apply to previously qualified license personnel. CSLB determines whether an exception fits the individual case. S12, S22

Prepare a simple table of employer or project, dates, classification-related tasks, responsibility and supporting evidence. Resolve inconsistencies before submitting. Passing the examination alone does not cure an application that lacks the required experience.
