What Texas requires

Texas does not list a general prelicensing course as a prerequisite for this standard route. A temporary-license path exists with different sponsorship and training conditions, so do not mix those requirements with the permanent resident path.

  • Pass the state licensing examination before submitting the standard resident application.
  • Complete the fingerprint and background process.
  • Apply through Sircon or NIPR within one year of passing, or the examination must be retaken.
  • Pay the separate state application fee shown on the TDI page.

Where to put your study time

The 30 scored Texas questions represent almost a quarter of the scored exam. They deserve their own practice pool, not a short supplement at the end of a national course.

  • Life policies, annuities, underwriting and retirement concepts.
  • Accident and health products, policy provisions and social insurance.
  • Texas statutes and rules common to life and health.
  • Texas provisions specific to life, health and HMOs.

Retakes are available, but repeating the same method is not a strategy

The candidate handbook says a failed candidate may schedule a new examination within one day and does not impose a limit on attempts at the same exam. Each attempt still requires another fee and more time.

Use the score report and your error history to change the next study cycle. Repeat attempts had a higher non-pass rate than first attempts in English during 2025.
