Life Insurance Awareness Month 2026: The Coverage Gap and the Career Opportunity

September puts life insurance into a national conversation. The verified opportunity is not a made-up search spike: only 51% of U.S. adults reported having coverage in the 2025 Insurance Barometer Study, and roughly 100 million said they needed life insurance or more of it.

What Life Insurance Awareness Month is

Life Happens created and coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month every September. The purpose is consumer education: helping families understand how life insurance can protect people who depend on their income.

That makes September a useful conversation starter for agencies and future agents. It does not prove that hiring or consumer searches peak in every market, so those claims should not be presented as fact without current data.

02

The documented coverage gap

These are national survey results, not a sales list and not a prediction that a new agent will convert a particular percentage. They document a genuine advice and protection gap.

2025 Insurance Barometer findingResult
U.S. adults reporting life-insurance ownership51%
Adults who believe they need more coverage40% — close to 100 million people
Hispanic adults reporting ownership40%
Adults expecting difficulty with living expenses within six months after a primary earner's death47%
03

Bilingual service is a responsibility before it is an advantage

The lower reported ownership rate among Hispanic adults supports accessible education in Spanish. It does not prove why any household lacks coverage, and it should never be used to pressure or stereotype a consumer.

A bilingual agent creates value by explaining exclusions, premiums, underwriting, beneficiaries and long-term affordability with the same precision in both languages.

04

The career upside is measurable

BLS reports median annual pay of $62,280 for insurance sales agents and a highest-10-percent threshold above $138,140. It projects about 43,100 openings each year on average from 2025 through 2035, mostly from workers changing occupations or leaving the labor force.

Those figures cover measured employees across insurance lines and exclude self-employed agents. They establish career scale, not a personal guarantee.

05

Use September to build the right foundation

  • Choose the correct state license and learn its actual scope.
  • Study national Life & Health concepts and state law separately.
  • Practice explaining why an answer is right, not memorizing its position.
  • After licensing, complete carrier training and appointments before soliciting business.
  • Build a compliant client-service process that continues beyond Awareness Month.
