Insurance Agent Commission Guide 2026: Life, Health, Medicare and Annuities

A combined Life & Health license can support several revenue streams, but there is no universal commission schedule. This guide separates official Medicare data from carrier-set compensation and shows exactly what a six-figure gross-production target requires.

Five numbers that must never be confused

  • Premium: the amount the customer pays for coverage.
  • Gross commission: compensation before agency splits, expenses, chargebacks and taxes.
  • Advance: commission paid before all premiums are earned and potentially recoverable after lapse.
  • Renewal: compensation tied to eligible in-force business in a later period.
  • Take-home income: what remains after expenses and taxes — not the same as sales volume or gross commission.

Medicare compensation is public — and plan-specific

CMS publishes a downloadable 2026 file with the compensation reported by Medicare plans using independent agents. It can be filtered by state, county, organization and plan. That is the correct place to verify a Medicare figure; one nationwide number is not accurate for every plan and market.

CMS states that initial compensation generally applies in the first year or after an unlike-plan-type change, and renewal compensation is generally half as much in later years for retained or qualifying like-plan-type enrollment. Agents also need state authority, annual training and plan contracts.

03

Life, annuity and Marketplace compensation is contract-driven

Life and annuity schedules can vary by product, premium, issue age, term, carrier, hierarchy and agent contract. Marketplace compensation can vary by carrier, state, product and effective month. A percentage copied from a recruiting page is not an industry guarantee.

What a $100,000 gross-commission target requires

This is the clear version of what is possible. The result follows from the assumed paid-and-retained case value; the table does not claim that any carrier will offer the rate or that an agent will reach the case count.

Turn gross production into a business plan

Florida and Texas do not impose an individual state income tax, but that does not make agent income tax-free. The IRS explains that self-employed individuals generally owe federal income tax and self-employment tax and may need quarterly estimated payments.

  • Subtract agency splits and any unvested amount.
  • Reserve for lapses, cancellations and chargebacks.
  • Track lead, marketing, technology, licensing and continuing-education costs.
  • Model renewals using actual persistency rather than assuming every policy stays in force.
  • Budget for federal income tax and, where applicable, self-employment and state tax.
